Recently, we obtained from relevant channels a set of test spy shots of a brand new high-performance version of the Land Rover Defender. It is expected that this new model will be positioned above the Land Rover Defender OCTA, with comprehensively enhanced off-road capabilities. It can be described as the wildest production Defender in Land Rover’s history, and it may be launched alongside the mid-cycle facelift of the Land Rover Defender, expected around late 2026 or early 2027.
Exterior: This heavily camouflaged test vehicle immediately shows differences from the standard OCTA – it is clearly built for extreme off-road driving. The vehicle features dual A-pillar snorkels, with high-position air intakes on both sides, significantly improving wading depth. The ground clearance is noticeably higher than that of the OCTA, with optimized approach, break-over, and departure angles. In addition, the wheel arches are more flared, and the wider track further enhances off-road stability. Although it was spotted testing at the Nürburgring, a track known for racing, this vehicle is obviously not designed for lap times – it is meant to conquer the toughest unpaved roads. Its overall style directly targets the Mercedes-AMG G 63 4×4², though it does not use a portal axle setup.
Quick review of the upcoming mid-cycle facelift Defender: As the first major facelift since the full model change in 2019, the vehicle retains the classic boxy shape while refining exterior details. It will also introduce a four-seat independent layout for the first time, and the powertrain is expected to see adjustments, further improving overall competitiveness.
Powertrain: It is expected that the new model will continue to use the 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine, shared with the current OCTA. For reference, that powertrain produces 635 horsepower and 750 N·m of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel-drive system, achieving 0-100 km/h in just 4 seconds. However, a modest increase in power output for the new model cannot be ruled out.
