Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4MATIC+ Specs, Six-Cylinder Return & China Export via Rokay

On October 29, the Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4MATIC+, a mid-size performance SUV under the AMG banner, made its debut. Its headline feature is the M256 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system, replacing the 2.0T + 48V powertrain of the previous 43 model and temporarily standing in for the 2.0T plug-in hybrid version of the 63 model.

Exterior. The new model largely carries over the design of the GLC 43. The most eye-catching element remains AMG’s signature vertical-slat Panamericana grille, with a large three-pointed star emblem set in the center and the slats finished in dark chrome. The front bumper is sharply angled and features large, partitioned air intakes that balance cooling demands with visual aggression. An active front lip spoiler can open or close to regulate cooling airflow according to driving conditions, optimizing high-speed aerodynamics.

AMG also offers an optional Night Package that swaps the window trim, exterior mirrors, and exhaust trim for high-gloss black or dark chrome finishes. A range of exclusive paint colors is available, and MANUFAKTUR custom matte paints are included on the options list.

Side profile. The double character lines follow the basic contours of the standard GLC, but the wheel arches have been flared and widened for a broader stance. AMG forged wheels up to 21 inches are available, paired with high-performance sport tires. At the rear, the full-width light bar is only functional at the two outer ends, with a black decorative panel in the middle that reinforces the horizontal visual width. The rear bumper integrates a large diffuser-style element and quad round exhaust tips; the assembly is not merely decorative but also helps manage airflow at the rear.

Interior. The cabin retains the GLC family layout but adds extensive AMG-specific performance cues. An AMG three-spoke Nappa leather multifunction steering wheel is standard, incorporating the AMG Drive Unit shortcut dials for one-touch driving-mode changes. Carbon-fiber trim is available across large areas of the center console, and some versions feature carbon weave with metallic threads for an extra performance edge. AMG sport seats have thicker side bolstering than the standard seats, providing greater lateral support during hard driving, and are offered in a variety of leather finishes with contrast stitching. A 64-color ambient lighting system with dynamic flowing effects is standard, as are illuminated AMG door sills.

Powertrain. The GLC 53 uses the M256 Evo 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with a 48V ISG (integrated starter-generator) mild-hybrid system. The engine produces 455 hp and 600 Nm of torque; an overboost function raises torque to 640 Nm for up to 10 seconds. The ISG contributes 17 kW and 205 Nm of auxiliary torque, improving throttle response and fuel economy. A 9-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT automatic transmission sends power through the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system, enabling a 0–100 km/h sprint of 4.2 seconds. With the optional AMG Dynamic Plus Package, top speed rises to 270 km/h and a specially tuned sport exhaust is included for a more forceful soundtrack.

Rear-wheel steering is standard, improving low-speed agility and high-speed stability. The GLC 53 also features the AMG RIDE CONTROL variable-damping suspension and AMG-specific dynamic handling systems. The AMG Dynamic Plus Package further unlocks RACE mode, active engine mounts, an electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential, and—for the first time on an AMG SUV—a drift mode, broadening the model’s playful character.

The GLC 53 4MATIC+ faces a two-front battle. On one side, it must measure up against the BMW X3 M50 in terms of six-cylinder mechanical character, chassis tuning philosophy, and equipment choices. On the other, it confronts the cross-segment pressure of high-performance EVs, which offer even more explosive acceleration and continue to attract buyers whose budgets fluctuate and who prioritize straight-line speed. The track is crowded, but AMG’s accumulated brand equity in combustion-powered performance and its mature chassis-tuning capability give it a real chance to defend this niche yet highly loyal six-cylinder performance SUV segment.

Under the wave of electrification, combustion-powered performance SUVs have become a niche category. Looking back at the market, AMG’s earlier strategy of installing 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines in mid-size sedans and SUVs can hardly be called a success, and the GLC 53 4MATIC+’s return to a six-cylinder engine is, in my view, unquestionably the right move. Rear-wheel steering, AMG all-wheel drive, and variable dampers are all standard, balancing daily commuting with handling prowess, while the options list leaves room for hardcore enthusiasts to upgrade further. Its core selling point is that it gives buyers who insist on the texture of an internal-combustion engine a proper six-cylinder option. Since it cannot out-accelerate EVs, it delivers emotional value instead—and that is precisely what buyers considering this price point are looking for.
